58 year old lady missing from home in Onehunga. 

AKLSAR called at 18:30 to assist with search. Searched reserves and foreshore.
Found at Red Hill, Papakura (near her old home) by someone who knows her and delivered her back to her home at 20:05

Line Rescue team called out at 23:55 for 5 people overdue at Kitikiti Falls, Piha

Five people with little experience had gone out canyoning at 4pm in the Kitikiti Stream area. When Police got the callout, they were three hours overdue and there was very little information about them, there gear, experience, etc. The main reason for the immediate callout of the Line Team was due to amount of rain that we had had that afternoon / evening.

The local ranger was also contacted and he found their car and waited there in case they came out.  They all walked out at about 12.30ish; all wearing head torches etc just as the first member of the Line Team arrived on site.

He checked out what gear they had and also had a talk with them. 

June 2008

Elderly man missing at Te Atatu

AKLSAR called out to assist 
He had gone off on his bike the previous day and visited various people in the area and stayed at friends place for the night.  Arrived back at his home as the teams were arriving.

Motor cross rider went for an afternoon ride from Wilson Rd, South Kaipra Head and did not return. 

AKLSAR ask to assist.  Discussed tactics with police and decided on 4x4 vehicles with 2 observers in each if possible, say 15 people.
His bike had broken down on the bombing range – found by search teams at 1 am.  He was tracked walking off towards the coast.  Beach searched.  Found by Eagle walking down the coast in the morning – ground teams would have found him otherwise.  He saw Westpac during the night but they did not see him.  He then went up into the sand dunes / forest and had a sleep during the night.  He had walked about 25 km.

94 year old female missing since midnight from Rest Home in Highland Park.

Police SAR asked AKLSAR to assist as staff had been unable to find her.   AKLSAR arrived at the rest home just as the lady was located in the complex. 

July 2008

A 59 year old male with early onset of dementia missing from rest home at, Bucklands Beach.  Last positively seen at 13:30.  Discovered missing at around 16:00. 

AKLSAR called at 20:45 to assist with searching of reserves, especially along foreshore and walkways, golf course and cliff tops at Music Point.
A search team obtained information of a sighting at 16:00 up near the start of Golf course.  Questioning of the informant revealed a good description of the person he had seen which matched that of the missing person.  Direction of Travel determined as moving south on the road.
A search team received information from the security guard at Halfmoon Bay that a person had been seen at around 20:00 in that area – description not a full match.
Found at 23:59 on Waller Road. 

Police rang at 16:42 re two boys missing; 8 year old and 6 year old.  Mother woke up this morning and boys were not at home.  Called Police at lunchtime.  Local Police have been making inquiries since midday and no luck. 

Police requested as many AKLSAR people as possible to meet at Parrs Park - junction of Seymour Road & Parrs Cross Road, Sunnyvale.
Police rang back at 16:44 – Stand down as boys had been located. 

August 2008

Rung by Police at 16:20.  Heads up on two female runners who have got themselves lost in the Hunuas.  Car located at Mangatawhiri Dam.  Duty Ranger due there shortly (16:30?). 

Police rang back - Rangers are in contact with them by cell phone and are comfortable that they can talk / walk them out.

Rung by Police at 19:57.  A 69 year old male Possum Trapper missing at Puhoi.  Car has been located adjacent to a patch of bush where he traps possums.  Need AKLSAR personnel to search the area.  Meet at Puhoi Fire Station.

15AKLSAR people responded.
Police have the Westpac helicopter coming and dog handlers.  Decided we were not able to put dogs in because of the possum bait.
Found a mate of his who has a map of his bait lines.  Searching following bait lines – difficult in dark and there is no response from missing person.
Possum Trapper found deceased along one of his bait lines.  Suspect died earlier in the afternoon.

September 2008

Two males went fishing on Sunday (14/9) in the Hauraki Gulf and their boat sank near Browns Island after being swamped by a wave.  Both were wearing life jackets and were together in the water for a while.  One managed to reach Browns Island on Sunday.  He managed to attract the attention of a passing kayaker on Monday morning who then called for help.  Searching by Police and Coastguard on Monday and Tuesday failed to find any sign of the missing person or the boat.  .

Police rang AKLSAR at 07:26 on Wednesday morning requesting six people to assist with searching the coastline of Rangitoto and Motutapu Islands for the missing person.  Nothing found.
Body found on Rakino Island later on the Tuesday morning by a boatie.

Police rang to say that there was an Asian female with injured leg in Destruction Gully.  Westpac helicopter could not be used due to the bad weather.

October 2008

80 year old male suffering from early onset of dementia and depression went missing from his home in West Harbour after lunch.

AKLSAR called out that evening .  Searched area but did not find him.  Eagle grounded due to weather that evening.  Eagle found him in the water next morning.
Suspect he jumped off the foot bridge to Moire Park near his home.

Evidential search of items in bush from the abduction of a female in June 2008.  She had been abducted from AUT and taken to Waitakere Ranges.  She managed to escape and came across a couple at Simla clearing who took her out of the bush via Fenceline Track.

Initial focus was on areas off the tracks from Piha and Anawhata Roads.  (Ian Wells, Ridge Road, Château Mosquito, etc) looking items that she has lost and any signs of a camp.
Her description of how she entered Simla Clearing is in line with her coming along Ridge Road. 
Suspect that she was taken in along Chateau Mosquito track to Simla track area where she escaped and eventually went up Simla track (possibly RGB) to Ridge Road and then Simla clearing.
Searched for two days and found nothing.

Police rang at 19:44.  A female suffering from dementia missing in the New Lynn/Avondale area.

Police asked for 8 AKLSAR members to assist with the search, mainly in police cars.
Police rang at 20:05 to say it is all off as she has been found.

November 2008

39 year old male hunter parked his car on the Kopu-Hikuai Rd summit on Friday to go pig hunting with two dogs and he failed to return home that evening

AKLSAR called on Saturday to assist.  18 people responded.
Sign found on Saturday morning – smoldering fire and pieces of plastic similar to that of an apron he uses at work.
He was found at around 13:00.

December 2008

Two females missing on Pounui Island.  AKLSAR called to assist with search.  Second call went out that evening for more people.  14 members attended.

The two ladies were at the school camp being held on the island.  They decided to go for a walk, but did not leave any intentions with anyone.  Walked across the island to a beach on the east coast. On their return they entered a bush area and got disorientated. Started heading towards the trig, but decided that was wrong.  Ended up walking across the island to the west coast.  There they turned right as they thought they were below the camp. Spent night in bush.  Found next morning by Deodar walking back down the coast.

January 2009

Male missing at Clendon.  AKLSAR asked to assist.
14 members attended.

Male went missing on 4 December 2008.  Police did conduct a search a week later, but did not find him.  Search reinstituted as it was thought was that he may have got stuck on the mud flats and drowned.  Search complicated by fact that carcasses of dead sheep had been dumped in the search area.  He was eventually found by smell.  He had hung himself.

Male missing from boating accident at Bottle Top Bay, Manukau Harbour.  AKLSAR asked to assist.  12 members attended on day 1 and 15 on day 2.

Two Polynesians had gone fishing in a small tin boat.   They had drunk a 40 oz bottle of rum between them.  One of them fell in the water.  Coast Guard did a search but did not find him.  AKLSAR found some foot prints on the beach and the survivor (drunk) said they were not his, therefore assumed to belong to the missing person.  Followed tracks and searched area but could not find him.   Sometime later the survivor said that he had gone up to the car and that they were his footprints.  Divers called in and body of missing person found by divers almost directly under the position where he fell out of the boat.

Police called AKLSAR at 19:30.  8 year old boy who had been mountain biking in Woodhill forest with his father is missing.

His father and fellow cyclists looked for approx 2 hours but could not find him and then called police.
He came out of the forest shortly after the call was made to AKLSAR.

Male in Glendene had threatened self harm and then disappeared.

Turned up at another address.

Person reported missing at Duders (Umapuna) Beach.

12 AKLSAR attended and searched the area.
He was found at another address in Dury.

Police called - Line Team called to Silverdale.  A male was on a cement silo at Silverdale and threatening to jump off.

AKLSAR Line Rescue Team sent.
Police negotiator talked him down while Line Rescue Team was on route.

February2008

Two Japanese exchange students and an ambulance officer did not come out of the Hunuas after a day walk.  They were due out at 21:00.
Rangers took no action last night as (i) they entered the bush late and (ii) the very mild weather.  Police rung at around 12:00.

Their intended route was from the Dan, Lilburne Road and Ernies track and back to the Dan.  Car parked at the dam (Mangatawhiri). 
When they got to Piggots at 17:00 they went up one of the ridge tracks and ended up at Kohikohinui Trig that night.  Eventually walked out to coast.

March 2008

AKLSAR called to assist with an evidential search in Preston Road area after a homicide

Search called off as AKLSAR members arrived at the Police Station as a person had been arrested.

Teenager missing off Cutty Grass track while looking for his dog.

AKLSAR responded and searched the area.  Managed to get cell phone communications with him, but took a little time to find him.  Eventually found at 02:45

April 2009

A female had been missing at Whangaparaoa for a number of weeks.  Possible suicide.

AKLSAR Line team called to search cliffs, etc.  Nothing found.

AKLSAR called at night to look for a 51 year old Botanist from Hawaii was reported missing in Piha Valley

Information was that he was most likely in the Piha Valley area, possibly on Maungaroa Ridge.  All tracks in the larger Piha Valley areas searched.  He was eventually found at end of Glen Esk Road in the early morning.

German missing on Mt Donald McLean

Night search done in very poor visibility and wet weather conditions.   Search suspended in early morning.
Found on Gibbons Track by a search team the next day

Missing Alzheimer’s patient (male) wandered away from home at Upper Harbour Drive at night.

He was wearing a WandaTrak unit.
Found on private property

Evidential search at Glenbrook

After review of the search for a male who went missing from the Steel Mill 5 years ago a further search was undertaken to eliminate some areas adjacent to the farm land.  Nothing found.

May 2009

An elderly male suffering from dementia went missing at approx 13:00 on Thursday while on an organised tramp outside Whangamata. (Whangamata Ramblers Group)

AKLSAR called initially early (02:45) Friday morning to supply some teams as the search had been unsuccessful so far.  Further teams sent down Friday night and on Saturday morning.  Tracks, streams and lines of easy access searched.  Found Saturday afternoon.

Female Alzheimer’s missing from Rest Home at  Northcote

AKLSAR asked to assist.  Streets and reserves in area searched.  She was found in her old home not far from the Rest Home.

Has been missing since Saturday.  AKLSAR called on Tuesday morning.  Searched reserves [Kauri, Ruru, etc] in area.  Information came to hand that his credit card has been used since in Whangarei.   Search suspended at end of day
